Riktor doesn’t like the way the policeman comes straight into the house without knocking. He doesn’t like the arrogant way he observes his home. The policeman doesn’t tell him why he’s there, and Riktor doesn’t ask. Because he knows he’s guilty.
But it turns out that the policeman isn’t looking for a missing person. He is accusing Riktor of something totally unexpected. Riktor doesn’t have a clear conscience, but this is a crime he certainly didn’t commit.
Karin Fossum has actually blew me away with her ability to make me feel so much for a character that to most would be seen as vile and disturbed because of his actions. But what I think we have here is a man who has been kicked by life and has just been pushed to the side and looked over, but the problem is because of that he thinks the world owes him something and he can just take what he wants and do what he likes to others.
This is a purely character driven book, which I liked a whole lot because it took a step away from the bloody and brutal. Fossum takes us on a journey inside the mind of a different sort of criminal, a very calm and calculating criminal.
The storyline is very intriguing and will very easily pull the reader in. Main character, Riktor, is a very complex man who isn’t what he seems on the surface. He isn’t shocked when a police officer arrives at his front door, because he knows he’s guilty of a horrific crime. But to Riktor’s shock, the police are investigating a different crime – one he didn’t commit….
I loved the suspense that was kept up right until the final pages. I think the great thing about this was the fact that Riktor didn’t actually commit the crime he is accused of but he had committed that same offence before, waiting to see if the police were going to discover this kept me right on the edge!
The ending is brilliant and I was very pleased even though a little part of me was secretly hoping for a different outcome!
I Can See In the Dark is a brilliant psychological thriller that will have readers everywhere on edge! The writing is utterly compelling and the main character will have your emotions on a roller coaster! I would highly recommend this!
