Interview with Gayle Forman
Tell us a bit about I Have Lost My Way.
Three young people—Freya, Harun and Nathaniel—with seemingly nothing in common except each is grappling with a huge loss. Freya is a singer on the verge of fame when she loses her voice. Harun is a closeted Pakistani-American who has been dumped by his boyfriend and is on the verge of losing his family. Nathaniel is an isolated young man newly arrived in New York City, on the verge of losing, well, everything. They collide. Become unlikely friends. And find the way out of their own losses is by helping the others through theirs.
Who was your favourite character to write and why?
Freya sparked the book idea. And Nathaniel broke my heart. But Harun is my favorite. It’s a little ironic that the character who is least like me is the one I understood immediately. I love them all. They’ve wormed their way into my heart more than any other characters. But I love Harun most.
If we were lucky enough to get a film, who could you see playing Freya?
It would have to be someone with a foot in the music world and one in the acting world, like Zendaya. Music is so important to Freya and even though she can’t presently sing, there would have to be music all over the film.
Favourite quote from the book?
It’s not a quote. It’s a small moment. A tiny act of generosity and empathy:
Nathaniel stares at his magically replenished plate. “If you weren’t hungry, why did you order all this food?” he asks. There’s a pause as Freya and Harun glance at each other.
Then they look at him. “Because you were,” they say.
What are you currently reading?
I just finished Educated by Tara Westover and I’m reading a draft of Jacqueline Woodson’s next middle grade novel (it’s brilliant) and after that I’m going to read Matt Haig’s How To Stop Time on vacation!
Are you working on anything at the minute that you can share with us? (Sneaky peek) 😉
I’m working on a bunch of things that I can’t speak to specifically but only can say they are all completely different!
