Title: Dark Heirloom
Author: J.D. Brown

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Book Blurb:

“You’re a vampire” is so not what Ema Marx wants to hear when she wakes from a two-day coma in a cryptic yet exquisite castle in northern Finland. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like why she’s able to see in the dark and walk through solid objects. What she doesn’t understand is why the other vampires expect her to have all the answers. It’s their fault she turned into one of them…right?
Jalmari’s hatred for his old-man intensifies when he’s ordered to bring that troublesome girl to their castle. He has a clan to run; there’s no time for babysitting newborn vampires no matter how they were converted to their culture. But when a two-thousand-year-old premonition threatens to take the crown and his life, Jalmari sees no other choice than to take out the catalyst, Ema Marx. Fortunately for Ema, she could also be the clan’s only savior.

The race to figure out her vampiric origins is on. And maybe she’ll get the hang of the blood-drinking gig along the way…

 Vampire Transportation by J.D. Brown

Before we begin, there is something I have to explain first. Those who already know me know that I do this quite often, but those who are meeting me today might think I’m a bit nuts.

You see, I talk to my characters as if they were real people. And I don’t just do it alone. Sometimes I get on Skype with other writers who treat their characters like real people and we let loose and let all our characters mingle and chat. It’s tons of fun, if you don’t look too closely into the possibility that we are all schizophrenic…

Anyway, I’m telling you this because today’s guest post will be done by one of my characters from my novel, Dark Heirloom. His name is Jalmari. He’s a vampire prince and he’s here to explain the mechanics of vampire transportation and do a little demonstration (that’s right, I totally pulled him out of his gloomy castle for this. That’s why we’re doing it at four in the morning. Oh and I haven’t had my coffee yet and he hasn’t had any O-negative so… you may want to step back. One more step. Keep going… Okay that’s far enough).

Jalmari, if you would kindly begin?

Certainly. The sooner we get this over, the sooner I can leave.

Mr. Charming *eye roll*

Ahem. J.D. wants me to demonstrate ‘phasing’. But to you humans, it would merely look like I am disappearing. I tried explaining that to her, but it’s like talking to a brick wall at this hour. So I’ll attempt to explain to you. Phasing is what we call ‘passing through solid objects’ or ‘flying through walls’ as J.D. likes to say. The act really is a combination of two other powers:  de-solidifying and levitation.  J.D. calls them ‘going invisible’ and ‘flying’, but I assure you it’s a finer art than that. We do not just go invisible. We disburse the molecules of our body from a solid to a gas form. Humans cannot see gas, so you get the illusion that we are invisible. And the difference between levitating and flying is that we do not have wings.

Geesh, speed up the lecture, will ya? I thought you were in a hurry.

*Glares* Yes, well… Ahem. To my right is an average dinner table. Watch how I can walk through the table by phasing my lower torso and upper legs….

Combined with a high speed, phasing is a nearly instant mode of travel. We can go very fast and don’t have to follow roads or worry about hitting objects. It is much more advanced than the automobile.

Cars. Anyway, thank you for the demo, Jalmari, you can return to your crypt now.

*Scoffs* Hollywood vampire jokes – you know we don’t really sleep in them.

*Grins* You never know, I have the pen, I make the rules, sweetie.

Leaving sounds brilliant. *Vanishes*

And that, my friends, is how we get creative with transportation in the Urban Fantasy genre. Excuse me while I hobble over to the Mr. Coffee…
