In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is–she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are–and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series–dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Wow, where to start? I loved this book. Without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. I think I am one of the last people to actually read this amazing book, now I understand what all the hype is about. Divergent is unputdownable, I was glued to the pages and couldn’t turn them fast enough, I ended up staying up all night as I just had to finish the book. Many thanks to HarperCollins for the review copy 🙂
The story follows seventeen year old Beatrice (Tris), who makes the choice to join the Dauntless faction, instead of Abnegation like her parents. Tris lives in a world where people are divided into factions, Dauntless, Amity, Abnegation, Candor, Erudite and of course the faction-less.
Tris has to complete the Dauntless initiation process, only so many are selected and only survive the brutally harsh training programme. There are fighting competitions and chilling fear landscapes.
Tris makes friends easily and she seems to be doing OK with her training. But there is more going on behind the scenes of the factions, things that will effect everyone. Tris will play a key part in the bigger picture.
Tris is different than others, the testing process doesn’t effect her the same way as the others. She needs to try and blend in with others or risk exposure, which would be extremely dangerous for Tris.
Four is a Dauntless mentor, he is tough, fear-less and very intriguing. Tris is drawn to him from the start. I think hes is a fantastic character and I am very intrigued by him myself. ; )
There are so many exciting twists and turns throughout this book, that you are not expecting. The ending is amazing, it left me begging for more, I cannot wait for Insurgent.
If you want a beautifully written fascinating, thrilling read then this is the book for you. I cannot believe this is Veronica Roth’s début novel, it really is epic and highly addictive. I will definitely be going back an reading this book again and again. If you haven’t been lucky enough to read Divergent yet, then go pick it up now 🙂
My favourite character in the book would have to be:
Tris- she is down to earth and totally relate-able, she goes through so much throughout Divergent and has came out swinging. She is a tough cookie, fearless, fierce and also intelligent. I cannot wait to read more about her in Insurgent.
