Summary from Goodreads
From the bestselling author of If I Stay – this summer’s YA blockbuster film.
This characteristically powerful novel follows eighteen-year-old Cody Reynolds in the months following her best friend’s shocking suicide.
As Cody numbly searches for answers as to why Meg took her own life, she begins a journey of self-discovery which takes her to a terrifying precipice, and forces her to question not only her relationship with the Meg she thought she knew, but her own understanding of life, love, death and forgiveness.
A phenomenally moving story, I Was Here explores the sadly all-too-familiar issue of suicide and self-harm, addressing it in an authentic way with sensitivity and honesty.
Everybody handles grief in their own way, some better than others but all unique in their own right. Main character Cody deals with her best-friends suicide in a very proactive way which I had to admire. She was angry at her friend and also herself for not knowing that there was something wrong. When she starts digging into Meg’s life to find out the whys things take a slightly darker turn.
I adored the mystery surrounding the storyline and the slightly more sinister elements. I was kept guessing and never knew what to expect around ever darkened corner. When Cody meets with Meg’s roommates it becomes clear that they didn’t really know Meg either. So who did she hang around with? Where did she go?
The romance for me was a tad on the weird side if I’m honest, beautiful in it’s way but still strange. There were also some times when I thought Cody was becoming a bit obsessive and she made some reckless decisions that were totally addictive to read. It’s quite hard for me to actually pin down my feelings towards Cody though…
All in all I think I Was Here is a truly memorable story that tackles some tough themes with with care and beauty. It’s a quick read but a very fascinating one that is really well thought out. This is my first Gayle Forman book but it certainly won’t be my last!
